Maybe smaller chains and indy stores are the better way to go these days?

There aren't many, left, that could support the costs associated with large print runs. Instead you'd be faced with higher retail prices that go with higher unit costs that go with lower print runs. (Say that ten times fast). If we lost Borders, permanently, the ramifications would be enormous.

I'll admit to being optimistically naive on this point. As it is, I try to do most of my book-buying with the smaller shops these days as a matter of principle. Fortunately, I live in a city with several such shops in good working order, and recognize that this will not (yet) obtain everywhere.
