Prime Books Speech, Delivered by Jeff VanderMeer on Behalf of Sean Wallace

For several years now, Prime Books has enjoyed a special relationship with Australia—a recognition of the established and emerging talent of speculative fiction writers from Down Under.

From the critically acclaimed fiction magazine Redsine, co-edited by Trent Jamieson and Garry Nurrish to K.J. Bishop’s award-winning novel The Etched City, well-received first collections from Geoff Maloney and Anna Tambour, and now The Devil in Brisbane anthology, Prime Books has been committed to bringing Australian writers to the international stage.

Conceived of by Zoran Zivkovic, The Devil in Brisbane is, in content and through the able editorial assistance of Geoff Maloney, a showcase for Australian talent. It is also a testament to the wealth of writing ability here in Brisbane, as well as a physical manifestation of Brisbane’s strong commitment to the arts.

Prime’s commitment to the unique vision of Australia’s speculative fiction writers will continue in the years to come, with plans to publish novels and collections by Lee Battersby, Stephen Dedman, Paul Haines, Trent Jamieson, Angela Joose, Ben Peek, and Kaaron Warren, as well as editorial projects by Jonathan Strahan and Bill Congreve, among others. In many ways, this launch is part of an ongoing celebration of Australian speculative fiction writing.

On behalf of Sean Wallace, senior editor at Prime Books, and myself, thank you for making us part of your artistic community, and for your support.

Specific thank you’s from Prime to the festival and its many sponsors, to Sallyanne Atkinson, Rosemary Cameron, and the entire festival staff, including volunteers, to the city of Brisbane, the mayor, Fantastic Queensland, the contributors to the anthology, Geoff Maloney, and, of course, Zoran.

Thank you all very, very much.
